AI Agents in Field Service: 6 Jobs AI Can Do Today (With a Human in Control)

"AI-powered" appears on almost every software website now, usually without saying what the AI actually does. In field service, AI is genuinely useful in a few specific places, and risky in others. This article covers six jobs AI can do well today, and the one rule that makes it safe to use with real customers.

The rule: AI drafts, a person approves

An AI that books a technician into the wrong city, or sends a customer a confident but wrong message, does more damage than it saves. So in Opsenva, the rule is built into the platform: an agent produces a draft or a proposal, and a person approves it. Nothing is saved, assigned or sent to a customer without human approval. Agents also only see data as the user they act for, with that user's permissions.

The 6 AI agents that ship with Opsenva Field Service

1. Intake agent: from message to drafted job

A customer messages on WhatsApp, sends an SMS or leaves a missed call. The Intake agent answers, then turns the conversation into a drafted work order with the customer, site and equipment matched to real records. It never creates duplicate customers. If it cannot match a name, it shows the customer's own words for a person to resolve.

2. Dispatch agent: who should go, and why

The Dispatch agent proposes a technician and time window and shows its reasoning: skills, current workload, where the technician already is and the response deadline. It writes a proposal, never an assignment. The dispatcher accepts, changes or rejects it.

3. Field Report agent: speak instead of type

Technicians hate paperwork. With the Field Report agent they describe the visit by voice or text, and it becomes a pre-filled service report for them to check. Better reports, written in less time.

4. Follow-up agent: find work hiding in reports

Service reports are full of hints: "belt worn, replace next visit", "fault deferred, no access to roof". The Follow-up agent reads completed reports, notices the work they imply and raises it as a draft. This is revenue that usually stays buried in a notes field.

5. Customer Comms agent: updates that templates cannot write

A template can say "your technician is on the way". It cannot explain that a part is delayed and the visit moves to Thursday afternoon. The Customer Comms agent writes that message, grounded in the actual job record, and every message waits for approval before it goes out.

6. Maintenance Planner agent: fewer trips

Overnight, the Maintenance Planner groups due preventive maintenance into efficient visits, one trip per site instead of four, and leaves the plan as drafts for the morning.

Where AI should NOT be used

Some things are arithmetic, not judgement, and should stay as plain rules: SLA timers, invoice totals, tax calculations and maintenance due dates. An AI can do them, but more slowly, at a cost per run, and not always with the same answer twice. In Opsenva these are built as rules and scheduled jobs on purpose. Use AI where judgement helps, and rules where there is a right answer.

More AI that saves time every day

  • Voice form fill: speak into any form and the right fields fill in, marked for review before saving.
  • AI capture: photograph a document and get a pre-filled record.
  • AI module builder: describe a new module, or upload a screenshot of a form you use today, and get a draft to review and publish.
  • Choice of AI provider: Opsenva works with both OpenAI and Claude models, and you can switch without a redeploy.

Voice form fill is available on the trial and Enterprise plans.

Questions to ask about any "AI" field service product

  1. What exactly does the AI do, step by step?
  2. Can it send anything to a customer without a person approving it?
  3. Can it see data the user it acts for cannot?
  4. Does it show why it made a suggestion?
  5. What happens when it is unsure?
